Oh Faithful Brown Steed, You Shall Be Missed.

Old Abandoned Barn
You are inside an old abandoned barn. The sod roof is torn and broken in
places, allowing rain to gush in, leaving the interior all smelling dank
and musty. Old clumps of hay, blackened with mold dangle over the
collapsing loft, while patches of sodden straw cover the ground, leaving
other spots bare. The tool racks are broken and collapsing, and of course
the stalls are empty, no farm animals kept here for a long time. The view
through the broken roof makes it an excellent place to observe the local
area from.

A large rat, as black as coal, stares at you from the shadows.
A brown horse is here, nipping at a tuft of grass.

Quiet Pastureland
Around you spreads pastureland of dry grasses cropped short by herds of cattle

and flocks of sheep that graze here. The pastures here are fairly empty though,
with only a few herds and flocks, and only a couple farms dot the landscape.
Greater numbers of farms and livestock can be seen to the east, but westward
the pastures are replaced by a mixture of empty fields of tall dry grasses
intersparsed with small copses and groves of native oaks and fir. Directly
north of here the Caemlyn Road runs past, coming from Whitebridge and the
river Arinelle off in the distance eastward. Just south of here an old barn
stands empty and alone.

Circle of Light
High amidst the heavens, the Circle of Light is the hallowed ground of the
friends of the Light. From here, some of the major destinations around the
world can be reached, as shown by a large sign. A permanent fountain in the
center of the Circle gives a soothing backdrop to ponder mortal matters.

New characters should LOOK NAMES, HELP RULES, LOOK NOTICE and LOOK INTRO.
To obtain some free starting equipment, TELL GUARDIAN KIT.
It is strongly recommended that new players look at our website
at wotmud.org, before starting out, for the rules, maps, and more.

Ok, so it's not actually pk, but I'll tell you, I sat in shock for a while. I was trying to kill the rats in the barn for the crier, and since I was so low I kept fleeing so I wouldn't get hit too much. I did that several times, then all of a sudden, I was dead! As I fled out, at critical, a trolloc hit me once and it was all over for me! It all happened so fast, I barely knew what hit me. The best part? When I went back to where I died, all my belongings were still there. Thanks guys! Of course, my faithful brown steed was dead, but I'll get over that.

So, it's not much to look at. I'm not the hero I imagine myself to be when I think about my eventual introduction to pk. But as this is a blog about my experiences, I thought I'd share with you my first experience with death :).

  1. I don't have a log, but my first player death was a result of gullibility and lack of time. I had to get to work soon, so I was about to rent when a man looked at me, left, and right before I rented asked, "Are you selling that axe?" I assumed he was simply eq-less and needed one, so I was gonna give it to him when he offered 30 g to buy it, a sum that seemed rather large to me. Flags went up, but because I wanted to be nice in my new world (and on time for work!) I ran up to him (outside of the city, of course), suddenly fell asleep ("wake" did nothing), and woke up in the CoL. It was a marvelous experience! Then we rebooted and I lost my eq, but hey, it was SO COOL! I want a male channeler now!

    1. Aww, that's sad! I got silenced by a male channeler, but I didn't have any equipment he needed so he didn't kill me lol. We gotta watch out for those guys! They're tricksy! lol

  2. Three things!

First, congratulations on meeting the Guardian for the first time. His message will get annoying over time, particularly when you've died in a particularly frustrating manner ("Really, I get it, I died. Now would you STOP TALKING TO ME ALREADY?!") but glad the DS were nice and left your gear!

Next - check narrates often to see if DS are around, often someone will locate them or have seen them or something. If they're andor, it might be best to run to a city. The biggest thing, though, is what you were attacking and who was around for DS. Whelk is a fade, and fades get reports on who is in a certain room by rats and ravens following that person (for example, if a rat is following me, it will tell any fade in a certain radius the room name I'm in, for as long as it's following me. The same for ravens, although you can see them at least. This occurs, to my knowledge, on every tick AND when they start following you. Which means that when you saw the rat start following you, at the very least Whelk would have known you were there and brought his group, if he hadn't already seen tracks.

And lastly, that room you were in, with the rats, is inside a door. The door is called barn (type look to check if there are any doors in that direction. For this one, typing look north would tell you that 'the barn is open.' It does have that horse as you found, and is useful, but you can very easily be spammed in by a group just closing the door while attacking you. Really just handy to know, it's not immediately obvious and isn't used tons.

    1. Wow, I really messed up! I'm glad though, because I definitely won't make those mistakes again. Thanks for the advice :).

    2. You didn't really mess up, to be honest. You were crit, and ran into some DS and died in one hit. Even given the fact it's likely that they knew you were there because of the rats, it wasn't huge and they'd probably have found your tracks at some point. The door never came into play either, it's just for future reference really.
