Lifestyles of the Geared And Listed

Hey everyone! This week was a somewhat sleepy week for pk, but Kyra deserves congratulations this week for attaining Sei'taer 1 and knocking Tzao down to second place. Yeri also knocked Milian off the list and makes his appearance in seventh place. There was little activity on Light Side besides Elyse regaining the list in seventh position. Reaver saw Hress join the list in sixth place and Rudra dropping down to seventh.

Today's PK highlight demonstrates something that we talked about on Monday: getting disengaged by a bash, with disastrous results. Posted by Lykan in the "Ouch! Stab Thread!" thread on Art of War.

A Slowing Down

With the ending of summer comes the beginning of...well, more responsibility. I'll be posting a little less frequently on the blog, though the features will still remain. I'll probably reduce blog posts from 5 a week to 3-4, depending on the week. I will still be updating the information pages and welcome all contributions to the knowledge base! I'm also looking for someone with the ability to fancy up the database pages.

Thanks everyone for reading the blog! There's still many more adventures to come! :)

Wot About You Wednesday: Janielle

Hey everyone! Welcome to Wot About You Wednesday! Today, we are welcoming Janielle, from the Illian Companions. Welcome Janielle!

How long have you been a part of the WoTMUD community?

I started in WotMUD around June of 2011. So a little over a year now.

Tell us a bit about yourself irl. (for ex. age, sex, job, hobbies, anything not-WoT related.)

I am 22 and finishing up my acting degree in New York. I am planning on taking the LSAT in the Fall and law school next year. I bartend in Manhattan when I don’t have an acting gig lined up. I am an avid reader, gamer (PC and Playstation all the way!) and play soccer in what little free time I have.

Most memorable "newbie" experience?

Hmm. I have no idea who it was, but I remember being like level 12 or 13 on my old female channeler. Had never played a MUD or knew anything about pk. I war RP-ing with a friend our journey from the Two Rivers to Tar Valon for me to go to the White Tower and him to train as a Warder. Neither of us knew anything about pk, or this being a pk mud or that becoming a Warder/Aes Sedai was REALLY hard. We we in Caemlyn for the first time, reading room descriptions and getting excited when we killed things like elk. Then a bunch of DS show up and attack our 3 person party of newbs. I try to weave, not knowing that it is near impossible at that level against actual players. I ended up dying. When I left the circle, there was a player (again so sorry I forgot the name!!!) who had heard that I was killed and collected a spare set of equipment for me for free. That sort of thing always stuck with me (except for names....).

Name one thing you miss about being a kid.

I miss Halloween, like where you could actually leave at 6 and not be home until midnight and no one cared or tried to give you apples with razorblades in them or abduct you. Halloween was awesome.

What is your favorite part of the mud (ie, pk, rp, questing, smobbing)?

I like all of it really. Except in the biggest pks, I try to keep most of my actions on the mud in character, so I like when pk and smobbing can be extension of your RP. I remember a mobraid that Tlaloc ran in Caemlyn and he had the mobs yelling things at us, shouting orders to troops and it was one of the best things I have done on the MUD. Mob raids are relatively easy to fight, but grouping up and fighting off with Tlaloc doing what he does best made it so incredibly immersive.

What made you decide to join the Companion clan?

I joined the Companions mostly because an old friend of mine in the game recommended them. They were essentially a dead clan when I joined, it was only me, one friend, and off and on the Councillor Atienne. Eventually we built up and now the clan is pretty active. I loved the Companions from the book series, so since I cannot make a female Warder I thought the Companions would be a lot of fun to join.

What's the best thing about your clan?

The thing I love about the Companions is that it is small. I know all of the clan members well, talk to them often, and everyone is willing to help. We have a myriad of pkers, RPers, smobbers, questers, and no one cares. It is not a clan that devotes to pk, so for people like me who are only moderate at pk it is really nice to be in a clan that doesn’t demand it or that you are good at it. There is plenty of pk to be had and we go out in smob groups quite often. There is just a great sense of friendship amongst the clan.

Why should people join your clan?

The Companions are relatively low key. You can really do whatever you want, pk wherever you want and you don’t have to jump through hoops to get in or stay in. We help each other out as much as we can, giving gear or smobbing to get it, teaching pk and such. There is no pressure to rank quickly or slowly, or to be out pking. You really can play your character however you want and that more than anything is what I love about us.

What should they know before they apply?

We might not be the most well-respected or prestigious or bonused clan in the game, but if you are looking for a nice, welcoming atmosphere with a group of fun people, the Companions are definitely worth giving a look into.

Candy or ice cream?

Candy. Hands down. Milky Way. Or sour gummy worms. Key to my heart.

What is your biggest accomplishment in the game?

I primarily play this character, so each time I rank Janielle I find it really rewarding. I hope to go for Master (rank 7), but that will likely take me a few years. I have been a Councillor for the Companions for a while now, and I think my biggest personal accomplishment has been being able to help administrate the clan as it became more active again. It had like 3 active members when I started in the clan, now we have upwards of 10 or 11. Not saying that was my work that did that, but just seeing the clan that I love come back is incredibly rewarding.

What are your goals in the game?

I have always wanted to have a Master character and an Aes Sedai. I started the game playing a female channeler and played with the intention of only having one character, an Aes Sedai. So I still hope to maybe wear the shawl one day, but a more realistic goal is to master Janielle.

If you could change one thing about the mud, what would it be?

One thing to change....I would want to find a way to pay our Immortals. They do a phenomenal job with the access to the code they have, the time constraints, and even the low number of them. They do all of this without any sort of compensation. I think that if we were able to pay them it would show how much we do appreciate their work (even if all we do is moan and whine on forums) and we would hate for the game to stop running. And if they were paid we could attract more Immortals and their time would be rewarded, so they would burn out at a lower rate and be less tired when doing the work. Could be way off base and I am pretty sure you are not able to do it, but I think that would really help the MUD.

What is your motto in life?

When life gives you lemons, you say ‘f*** the lemons.’ And bail.

What advice do you have for newbies just starting out?

Don’t be discouraged by the difficulty of this game! It is very hard and takes a long time to get acquainted with, but it is a great game. And there are plenty of people who will help you with equipment, game mechanics, or the map. Just stick it out and this game can be really fantastic. I know I have considered quitting a lot, but I am happy each time I did not.

Thanks for taking the time to share with us, Janielle! Good luck with the LSAT! If you guys have any questions for Janielle, leave a comment below and we'll try to get those answered. If you are interested in being featured on Wot About You Wednesday, contact me on the forums or by emailing me at wotmudnewb@gmail.com.

Bashing 101

I'm probably the last person who should be telling anyone about bashing, but I figure the best way to start a conversation is to jump right in. Hopefully some of you correct or clarify where I'm wrong!

Before we start, I wanted to remind you of the log that brought this all up (posted by Kyra in the Ouch! Charge Thread! thread):

Chaaaaarrrge!! *Novus* bleeds profusely as you skewer him with a partisan bearing the arms of Ghealdan!
This session you've landed 123 out of 231 charges (53% landed)
*Novus* is dead! R.I.P.
You feel the Weave of the Wheel tighten around you.
You receive your share of experience...
Oh, much better the second time around.
Your blood freezes as you hear *Novus*'s death cry.

So, you've practiced bash, you've practiced ride to at least level 6 and you've got a good bashing weapon. Now what? Time to start bashing, of course! Every time you bash something or someone, except under certain circumstances, your opponent will be "sat down" for two rounds and won't be able to hit you. They are literally sitting. This is important to note, because other game mechanics affect this. After two rounds, they automatically stand back  up and resume fighting, though you won't see a room echo reflecting this. They'll just start hitting you again.

Occasionally, you will find that your bash only lands for one round. This normally happens when someone tries to flee immediately prior to getting bashed. In that case, the flee will execute after the first round, rather than waiting for the full duration of the bash. This is known as a one-round bash.

Sometimes, you will miss a bash, and this is where Kyra's knowledge of game mechanics and quick reactions helped her secure her kill. Sometimes when you miss, you disengage from your target. If you've ever gone smobbing, you know that sometimes if you're not buffing and you miss a bash, you have to manually stand up and re-enter combat. Well, the same is true when you're fighting another person. In most cases, your next auto-attack will force the other person to stand up and re-engage, but if you're really quick, you can do as Kyra did, and disengage. Since she had started a bash already, her auto-attacks had stopped. She saw immediately that Novus had disengaged due to his bash and she hadn't hit him yet, so she was able to disengage herself from the fight and charge him before he could react, thus netting her the kill.

Being aware of the mechanics of bashing is very important. There are other situations where you could find yourself sitting or dangerously disengaged due to a bash. Probably the most dangerous of all is when a stabber is trying to stab you. I have seen a number of logs on the AoW forum of people missing bashes and immediately getting stabbed because they were disengaged from their target.

Hopefully this information can help you be more aware of what's happening during combat and avoid the perils of bash disengage!

Lifestyles of the Geared and Listed

Wow, there was tons of shuffling going on this week for Seanchan and Light Side! Tzao is the only Sei'taer to remain in his spot. Kyra and Tuk both moved up and Milian found himself back on the list. Meanwhile, Lakitu, Tekela and Ragen were bumped down the list. On Light Side, Vaen and Fyran once again traded spots, with Fyran knocking Vaen out of second place. Elyse found herself knocked off the list while Daeny and Trepid both moved up. The only source of calm this week seemed to be Dark Side with no movement whatsoever on the Reaver list.

Today's PK highlight features a great charge by Sei'taer Second, Kyra. It shows how quick thinking and knowing game mechanics can help you get kills. We'll talk about this kill and the mechanics of bashing on Monday, so be sure to check in for that!

Wot About You Wednesday: Tuk

You may have noticed that it is, in fact, Thursday. Not Wednesday. Yet here we all are, experiencing Wot About You Wednesday. Well, I missed a day. Due to some communication issues and some stuff that came up for me yesterday, nothing got posted, but don't worry! Here it is for your enjoyment!

Today's Wot About You feature is Tuk! Currently Sei'taer Fourth and a Master in the Morat'raken clan, Tuk is a devout pker and a long time player of WoTMUD.

How long have you been a part of the WoTMUD community?

10ish years Id guess. I never payed much attention and I only played a few hrs per month at first, plus I've stopped playing for a couple 1-2 year long periods.

Tell us a bit about yourself irl. (for ex. age, sex, job, hobbies, anything not-WoT related.)

Im a 23 year old guy. I used to live at the beach and teach sailing while finishing my bachelors. I broke my neck around two years ago in a diving accident so I've had plenty of downtime since then while I do rehab. I used to really love the WoT series but over the years and re-reads it has lost it's flare. It'll always be among my favorite though.

Sweet or salty?

Salty!

Does your character name have any special meaning? If not, how did you choose it?

Sadly, like most of my characters, I traded for Tuk. I've never had much luck statting.

What is your most memorable "newbie" experience?

My most memorable newbie pk experience was blicking Kaliya malk on my first trolloc rogue. She proceeded to alt and chase me into keep and die, delivering 2 full kits to newbie me back when eq was actually rare. Granted, I gave a big chunk of it to Mendoze to trade for a heron because Im a nice guy, but it was pretty cool at the time  I also remember the first time I logged on the mud: stumbled around for 10 mins, quit out and said screw that stupid game. Fell into it again 6 months or so later and got hooked.

What is your favorite part of the mud (for example: pk, rp, questing, smobbing)

Pk is what I do, mainly. I dont rp much at all and usually only quest for global quests. The only time I ever smob is to help other people re-eq.

What made you decide to join the Morat'raken clan?

It was/is the coolest clan on ss, duh!

What's the best thing about your clan?

The great atmosphere. It probably sounds elitist but the fact is that we are an exclusive clan and dont clan many people. We all get along and raken is the only clan I am in where I don't have to deal with idiots.

Why should people join your clan?

The cool people in it, the coolest clan base in the game, great rp, and of course the neat bonuses.

What should they know before they apply?

It isn't easy and it isn't quick. Everyone wants a raken and we get flooded with applicants who want to play for a few weeks and then move on. Put some time and effort into your character; it'll pay off. Play and be active and become known before you clan. Show some dedication and we'll respond.

What is your biggest accomplishment in the game?

I don't really have one. I've done most everything there is to do on wotmud: I've played nearly every character/bonus there is, I've been in most all clans I want to be in, I've mastered on all three sides, I've played a dl and a fade or two, and I've been on all three lists simultaneously.

What are your goals in the game?

Goals are what keeps any game fun. I've got a new character I'm working on that is fun and I'm debating taking an alt rank8 but I'm lazy :p

What, if anything, do you listen to while you pk?

I listen to a Pandora station that Santino unknowingly created for me. The base list consists of artists like Anberlin, Kings of Leon, Shinedown, Trapt, and 10 Years. It's stellar.

If you could change one thing about the mud, what would it be?

I'd put someone in charge who was more in touch with the playerbase and the game in general.

What advice do you have for newbies just starting out?

Go out and have fun. Explore, do different things, try different sides and characters. Expect to die (you will die a lot) and learn to re-eq by yourself because you won't always have help. That being said, don't be afraid to ask for help. Ask politely and genuinely and you can usually find someone to help you.

Thanks for taking a bit of time to share with us, Tuk! Check back on Friday to find out if Tuk is still Sei'taer Fourth in the Movers and Shakers portion of the Lifestyles of the Geared and Listed Friday feature!

Tell Me a Tale Tuesday

Tell Me a Tale Tuesday is a new feature on the blog that will highlight Roleplay stories and logs from around the mud. We talk a lot about pk and questing, but roleplay is a very large part of the game and I think that we should take some time to appreciate the creativity that the community shares, don't you agree?

Today's featured log was posted in the Roleplay forum by Roberto and showcases a performance by the gleeman, Dare.

Dare says 'I'll start with a story about wb.'

Dare says 'save robertos song for last.'

Dare grins evilly.

emote wonders if he can get a stab off and escape

Dare points at the gleeman.

Verania looks at you.

Dare grins evilly.

Verania says 'you'd eat pain :P'

Leria disappears into the void.

Leria has returned.

Leria says 'I'm awake I swear!'

The ratter bellows 'Paying out for scalps of the shadow at The Northern Road.'

Dare says 'let's get this show on the road.'

A bloodstock stallion pricks its ears forward and looks alert.

Dare sings ' Now settle on down, and I'll weave for you're a tale,'

Leria smiles warmly.

Dare sings ' A horrible situation that the Light mustn't fail,'

Dare sings ' The Horde has risen their plans are clear,'

Dare sings ' Killing all with sword and spear,'

Dare sings ' Trollocs now run the city with a bridge of white,'

emote wipes a tear from his eye.

Dare sings ' Death soon follows any in their sight,'

Dare sings ' With heads of wolves, boars and bears,'

Dare sings ' The city is clearly theirs,'

Dare sings ' Fighting the horde through ash and flame,'

Dare sings ' Bashing and slashing, the end is the same,'

The door is opened from the other side.

Thefter has arrived from the south.

Thefter tries to open the trapdoor, but can't.

Dare sings ' The horde keeps on coming seemingly without end, '

Thefter knocks on the trapdoor.

Dare sings ' The pattern is curves here, the threads caught in a sharp bend,'

The trapdoor is opened from the other side.

Thefter leaves down.

Dare sings ' Curdling and bubbling the evil pours from the well,'

The trapdoor closes quietly.

Dare sings ' Blood and rotting corpses are all one can smell,'

Someone knocks on the trapdoor from the other side.

The trapdoor is opened from the other side.

Thefter has arrived from below.

Dare sings ' With a hold in the lands of the Light, the Shadow will rise,'

Thefter leaves south.

Dare sings ' Who will lead the Light to the Shadows demise,'

The trapdoor closes quietly.

Dare sings ' Popping the bubble of evil, a Ta'veren we need,'

Dare sings ' Sword and Shield with a powerful steed,'

A shapely young woman returns from her break, re-opening the store.
A bartender returns from his break, re-opening the store.

Dare sings ' The Lion Warden are just what we need,'

emote wipes another tear from his eye.

Larke has arrived from the south.

Larke smiles happily.

Dare rolls his eyes...sheesh!..

Dare winks at Gloria.

Curarirdn claps approvingly.

clap

Larke kicks the door shut

Clap, clap, clap.

Dare sings ' The city of White Bridge will surely be freed,'

Larke closes the door.

You say 'beautiful'

Dare sings ' And we all with dance with Jak' O the Shadows!'

Dare sings ' We'll drink the wine till the cup is dry,'

Dare sings ' And kiss the girls so they'll not cry,'

Larke blushes.

Dare sings ' And toss the dice until we fly,'

Dare sings ' To dance with Jak o' the Shadows.'

Dare sings ' We'll dance all night until the moon runs free,'

Dare sings ' And dandle the lasses upon our knee,'

Dare sings ' And then you'll ride along with me,'

emote claps along to the beat!

Dare sings ' To dance with Jak o' the Shadows.'

Dare sings ' There's some delight in ale and wine,'

Dare sings ' And some in girls with ankles fine,'

Dare sings ' But my delight, yes, always mine,'

Dare sings ' Is to dance with Jak o' the Shadows.'

Dare sings ' We drink all night and dance all day,'

Dare sings ' and on the girls we spend our pay,'

Dare sings ' and when we're done, then we'll away,'

Larke weaves her hands, creating a hearty meal in the process.

Larke eats a strange fruit.

Dare sings ' to dance with Jak o' the Shadows.'

Dare sings ' to dance with Jak o' the Shadows.'

Gloria stops resting, and clambers on her feet.

Dare bows deeply.

clap

Curarirdn claps approvingly.

clap

Clap, clap, clap.

Clap, clap, clap.

Fender gives a round of applause.

Larke explodes with whistles and cheers.

clap dare

Curarirdn explodes with whistles and cheers.

You clap him on the back.

Verania cheers for Dare, causing quite a ruckus.

Fender gives a forest sentinel an order.
A forest sentinel gives a round of applause.

say amazing!
You say 'amazing!'

Gloria buys a mug of ale.
A bartender puts some coins in a small purse.

Dare says 'Now!'

Gloria claps approvingly.

Larke says 'huzzah!'

Gloria drinks stout ale from a mug of ale.

Dare says 'The Balid of Roberto!'

Verania says 'is that like a ballad?'

Larke grins at Verania.

Dare says 'Let the vocalized roasting styleings fo Dare begin!'

Fender tsks at his wife to be polite.

Curarirdn says 'is it about a man from Nantukkett'

Dare says 'Roberto only wishes.'

Dare throws back his head and cackles with insane glee!

Dare places the flute to his lips.

Dare begins to play a striking march.

draw
You are already wielding a weapon!

sheath
You sheath a dagger of green jade into a set of cloth sleeves.

A quick, upbeat marching tune rides on the winds.

You say 'be careful gleeman'

Dare winks suggestively at you.

Dare sings ' Oh, Roberto is needy oh yes indeed,'

Larke bellows 'santino you hunk, get in here :P'

Dare sings ' For a performance he'd beg a plead,'

Dare sings ' Crying and pleading, begging and pleading,'

The door is opened from the other side.

Dare sings ' All skills learned from generations of inbreeding,'

Santino has arrived from the south.
A bloodstock stallion has arrived from the south.

Santino closes the door.

Larke wiggles her bottom at Santino.

Curarirdn chuckles politely.

Larke snickers softly.

Dare sings ' Whining and nagging without an end in sight,'

Gloria snickers softly.

Fender stifles a laugh.

Larke grins at Dare.

Dare sings ' Threatening to warrant me and make me fight,'

Leria politely covers her mouth with a gloved hand.

Dare sings ' Holding out till the bitter end,'

Dare sings ' Thinking of a way to creatively offend,'

Dare sings ' So I might ask you Roberto my friend, '

Dare sings ' What do you think of these phrases that I've penned?,'

You peer closely at him, trying to figure him out.

Dare sings ' Will you have me dance for you, the Sa'Sara perhaps?'

Dare winks suggestively at you.

Fender chuckles politely.

Dare sings ' Sing and yell and type in call CAPS!?'

Larke snickers softly.

Dare sings ' Tell jokes till your sides hurt, and you leak from your bladder?'

Dare sings ' Laughing so hard that it really doesn't matter?,'

You say 'if you could!'

Gloria drinks stout ale from a mug of ale.

Gloria drinks stout ale from a mug of ale.

Dare sings ' Fill you up with beer, wine and mead,

Dare sings ' Make you giggle as you smoke some broomweed,'

Curarirdn snickers softly.

Dare sings ' Tell you a tale of a thiefbane at his best,'

You grin evilly.

Dare sings ' I'm going to be serious here now, no jest,'

Dare sings ' While Roberto may be good, his stab is made of weak,'

Larke throws back her head and cackles with insane glee!

You try to quietly draw a dagger of green jade from a set of cloth sleeves.

Dare sings ' Failing hides, backstabs, and yes, sneak,'

Fender peers closely at you. Guard your secrets carefully...

Dare cringes in terror!

The gleeman pales as the tension rises.

Gloria comforts you.

Dare sings ' But do not blame his he's doing the best he can,'

The gleeman starts biting his nails.

Dare sings ' Without a brain he's like the straw man,

Dare sings ' Oh Roberto, Roberto, you're such a great friend,'

You peer closely at him, trying to figure him out.

Dare sings ' A hand to you I'll always extend.'

The door is opened from the other side.

Tevin has arrived from the south.

Tevin closes the door.

Tevin knocks on the trapdoor.

Dare offers a hand of friendship to Roberto.

Dare throws back his head and cackles with insane glee!

Smobs!

Yes, that IS a word and if you've played WoTMUD for more than a week or so, you probably have heard this word thrown around. I'm pretty sure it stands for Super-mob. Since mobs are those NPC's we see everywhere from the grocer to the Kings and Queens in their castles, it stands to reason that a Super-mob would be a really strong mob. Which it is, but it's more than that.

An smob is a group of mobs of varying difficulty that a group of people kill for high quality equipment. There are also mini-smobs that can be soloed or with two people, such as the Cold Eyed Man on the Almoth Plain. There are TONS of smobs in the game. Some of them are stand-alone smobs and some of them form a chain where you have to acquire an item from the first one to unlock the second one and so on.

I really don't know a lot of specific information about smobs, which is why I've been reluctant to write about it until now, but I've recently discovered an amazing resource that I really wanted to share with you. It is a database of smobs. It lists basically anything you might want to know about the smob from its location to what it loads. I'm not entirely sure if it's up to date, but it is a great jumping off point if you are looking to start smobbing.

Which I was! I've been fortunate to be included in a few smob groups, but it's really hard to figure out what's going on in a big group because basically the leader leads you around and you lose track of where you are, and then he opens all the doors and collects all the keys so you never really know what the details are. Then you kill things and loot the equipment and split it among the members of your group. It's a lot of fun, but unless your leader is making a concerted effort to teach you about each smob, it can be hard to pick up the finer details. That's why I really love Lizner's Smob Database. It also points out which smobs are stabbable, which gave me an idea. As it happens, I have a level 31 rogue.

Excited at the prospect of actually soloing an smob, I headed out to Haddon Mirk to search out the Deranged Wolfbrother. Oh yes, I was determined to discover his secrets and bring about his demise. When I found him, I felt like a giggly schoolgirl. In the course of killing the Deranged Wolfbrother, I discovered a few things. First, it will take a long time. There will be a lot of regenning and waiting involved in such an endeavor. Second, it will take a long time. Bring food and water because there will be a lot of regenning involved. Third, don't get frustrated if it takes a long time. You might clumsy five or six times in a row, but then you might get lucky and land 3 or 4 and then he's dead! Fourth, be really, really careful. It will take a long time and it can be dangerous if you get caught by an enemy. There is only one door leading in and out and there are rats inside. Be sure to kill them quickly.

The tactic I used to kill the Deranged Wolfbrother was simply to ignore his wolves. I just went for the stab on the wolfbrother over and over and eventually I got it. It was a really amazing feeling to see this:
A deranged wolfbrother hermit makes a strange sound as you place a sharp, red stone dagger in his back!
A deranged wolfbrother hermit is dead!  R.I.P.
Oh, much better the second time around.
Your blood freezes as you hear a deranged wolfbrother hermit's death cry.
Victory!! And for my efforts, I got a gator skin bracer and a bronze scourge. The first time I killed him, I got a bearskin tunic and some other nice things, but I can't recall what they were.

I intend to have an Smob information page on my blog, but since I have very little information right now about them, it would be skeletal at best. Check out Lizner's smob database for information about smobs. You'll be able to find the link in the Helpful Links section in the left sidebar.

And in the same vein, I'm looking for someone knowledgeable about databases who might be interested in fancying mine up a little bit. My ability to create helpful databases is sketchy at best and it would be great to have something that was a little more user friendly. If you're interested in helping out, forum mail me or email me at wotmudnewb@gmail.com

Happy Monday!

Lifestyles of the Geared and Listed

There wasn't really a lot of movement this week on the lists. We saw a few new names and couple people swap positions, but it really seemed to be a quiet week overall. for the Seanchan, Ragen and Tuk swapped places and Yeri made a new appearance on the list in seventh place. For Light Side, Vaen bumped Fyran out of second place, moving him down to third. After an uneventful week last week, Lormor bumps Hress out of seventh place on the Reaver list.

Today's pk highlight of the week is a link, rather than an actual re-posting because it's quite long. But it seemed to be quite the controversial topic this week and involves the killing of an Aes Sedai at the hands of a Child of the Light followed by the unceasing hunt of the grieving warder to avenge the Aes Sedai. Sounds like the beginning of a great story to me!

Doublelines

I haven't been able to devote as much time as I would have liked to the blog or the mud this week, but I'm hoping that will change next week. What little time I've had has been spent doing chores such as dishes, raking paths and shelving books in the Tower. When I'm not up to my neck in manual labor, I'm searching every nook and cranny of the Tower for lost items to return in exchange for quest points. As one would expect, the White Tower is ENORMOUS. I've found most of the items, but I haven't found any rats in the Tower and there's still a missing book to be located.

It's been one whole week in the Tower and it's been pretty much what one would expect for a Novice. Work, work work. There haven't been any classes this week, and there's nothing upcoming so far, but I'm hoping an interesting class comes up. I'm anxious to begin learning! I think next week I can send a request to the Hall to move up one rank, so I'm really eager for that as well!

In the meantime, I've also been able to get in a little bit of exp and a few pk lessons. I thought today I'd talk briefly about a concept called "doublelining." A quirk of the mud is that if you flee, there is a period of lag. As a consequence, the very next command you enter after fleeing will be executed immediately, before any command entered by anyone else. Why is this important? Because 99% of the time when you are fighting, someone will be spamming for you. That can make it really hard to get away when you're stuck in a narrow area. By doublelining (or sometimes called "dlining"), you can get past the people spamming for you because your next command (presumably a direction!) will execute before their "k xxx" command. So the next time you're stuck, remember to dline! It could save your life.

Wot About You Wednesday: Dare

How long have you been a part of the WoTMUD community?

I have been part of the WoTMUD community for what will be nine years this fall.

Tell us a bit about yourself irl. For example, age, sex, job, hobbies, anything not-WoT related.

Oh my, where to start…I’m a 23 year old male, I live in Missouri. I have a number of jobs including an EMT-B, a dispatcher/jailer for my local county, I also own my own computer repair business. I am a father to two children Austin four and Alyzabeth 2, as well as husband to my wife Kelly. I am currently attending college for my Bachelor's in Information Technology with Specialization in Information Assurance and Security, where I am currently on the Dean’s Lists. As far as hobbies go I have a number of them, I make chainmaille armor and have been known to make jewelry from time to time. I also have in recent years taken to building my own MUD.

If you had to describe yourself using three words, it would be…

Kind, Cheerful, Perverted

What is your most memorable "newbie" experience?

I can remember when I first started so many years ago, walking around in the Bream Wood just east of Caemlyn killing mole and deer when this strange looking fellow walked into my room. His name was unlike anything that I had seen before it had these strange *’s around it. I can remember thinking to myself, ‘Wow, this guy must be special I think that I should follow him around for a while.’ So that is just what I did, up until the point that he yelled at me, told me to get lost, and when I did not, he killed me! It wasn’t until sometime later that I came to learn that he was a powerful Fade… A bad guy it would seem.

Whtat is your favorite part of the mud (for example, pk, rp, questing, smobbing)

I enjoy many different things that this mud has to offer, although PK is not my favorite thing in the mud, I do PK from time to time. RP is something that I will go out of my way to find in this game. While many run from EF to FD to find PK, I would travel further to find RP. When a good quest comes about I’m usually all in for helping, in past years I did this from the side line, using my knowledge of the books and many things WoT to coach my team through things. But with all of these things, I still enjoy one thing more, the people, for it is the people that make this mud what it is, the players and Immortals alike.

If you could have an endless supply of any food, what would you get?

I’m going to make this one short and say simply…. PIZZA!!!

What made you decide to join the Gleeman clan?

I chose to join the Gleeman clan after reading the books and having some writing experience myself, in the form of some stories that never really got past the middle. I had met with many member of the clan back when many of them were still active, and found them to be an enjoyable group. I applied and joined the clan… something of a year or so later, this was sometime around the ‘Great Crash’ which if you ask anyone that was playing back then it felt as if it were years till it came back up.

What's the best thing about your clan?

There are a great number of thing that are good about the Gleemen. I feel that one of the best things of the clan is that it allows you to be your own person. The Gleeman clan is a true gift, we are allowed into most cities with open arms. We are not a justice clan and therefore do not issue warrants, nor do we war with any nation other than those of the Seanchan Empire and the Dark One’s forces in the north. We are a group of free men and women, bound by no King, Queen, or other ruling body, that travel about the world and spread story and joy of joy, war, and sorrow.

Why should people join your clan?

The Gleemen are a group of closely knit men and women that work together to achieve many goals. Group performances, helping nations to organize special events, among other things. Being a Gleeman is as times like being a party planner and booking yourself for the party, inviting all of your friends, and paying yourself once the party is over.

What should they know before they apply?

There are a number of things that people should consider when thinking about joining the Gleemen. You must be at least level 20, the person can for no reason hold any warrants from and nations under the Light. Any persons who are able to touch Saidin or Saidar will not be granted entrance into the clan for purely political reasons.

What is your biggest accomplishment in the game?

At the beginning of this year I achieved Rank 7 within the Gleemen Clan, and with the rank comes the title of Master and many other perks that come along with the position. Although my true reason for wanting this position was to get mob lead, which enable you to lead around a mob from you clan, and order then to do nearly anything that a player can do, for strictly RP reasons. A rather large accomplishment that I’d like to announce is my recent slaying of Nooro a Dreadlord in Caemlyn.

What are your goals in the game?

My only goal in the game is simply to make it a better place for the players. If that means making a fool of myself or breaking my Rp and PKing to allow someone else to get away.

If you could change one thing about the mud, what would it be?

I would bring more RP and questing to the mud if that were ever possible, but with so many people’s RP being PK there is little that a single person or a small group of people might do. However, I will keep trying.

What advice do you have for newbies just starting out?

Firstly, if you think you’ll want to read this all at one time you’ll likely want to go to the bathroom and get some milk and cookies because I’m preparing to become VERY long winded.

This game is exactly that, a game, in fact some people might not even call it a game. It is text one a screen, and while it can be fun, don’t take it too seriously. I know just starting out that you might think that getting your equipment taken, loosing levels, being ambushed by a fade and three trollocs while you’re out exploring through the woods, of even putting your canoe in your pack while you’re on the water, effectively drowning yourself, is the worst thing ever. Equipment can ALWAYS be replaces, experience and levels can always be regained, and you damaged pride well it might never recover but sometimes you just have to move on.
In reference to the people within the game. If someone in the game angers you, you much realize that, there is a real person behind that name that is chatting, telling, yelling, or narrating back and forth with you. They have are alive and breathing and have feelings, well most I’m not all too sure about a few of the people out there… You know who you are. I’m only kidding. Many of the people that play this game are completely kind and would do nearly anything for anyone else if they had the need. I can tell you that within the past week Protus a newly Mastered Valon Guard and myself have given out sets of high end equipment to many people. Putting it in the barrels located in Tar Valon, Caemlyn, and Tear.

Get out of the cities, walk around on a low level character lvl 15-19 is great for exploring, hunters with high search are better. Read the room descriptions and ‘search’ in directions that look like they might hide something interesting. Also there are some things in the rooms description that you might be able to look at and gain some greater insight. While this is not possible with all things within the rooms description there are a few that DO work. There are many secret and hidden rooms and hidden paths around Caemlyn alone. I’ll give you a hit to one, in an old house south of Caemlyn’s east gate near the auction house, there is a hidden tunnel, look to move to tiles on the floor. There is also a hidden room someone near the park in Caemlyn, but only the most skilled of searchers will be able to find it. One final thing the first person that can tell me where exactly the tree house and the door name to is is in the Bream Wood east of Caemlyn will get a special prize.

If you plan to PK on WoTMUD, which most do, learn the local jargon. BGS often refer to bridge guards Caemy = Caemlyn, 4K=Four Kings WB=White Bridge, TV= Tar Valon, EF=Emonds Field, FM=Far Madding, Dog refers to the Dog gate in FD, Keep or sometimes known as RK is a Darky strong hold located north of FD, TKD = Thakan’dar, otherwise known as hell, Blod or Blodfest is kind of tricky, blodfest is both a mob and a place, But where there is one the other is also. Blodfest is a movable darky stronghold that loads in a number of different places down in the LS or Light Side lands. These places inclide and are not limited to Tear/Illian road, GF = Great Forrest, Cara or Caralain Grass, and a few other places around the world.

Clans have also come to be abbreviated CoL = Child of the Light, HoL=Hand of the Light *oL= Child or Hand of the Light. Cubbies are the Lion Warden the protectors of Caemlyn and Andor. Illuminators are known as Lumies. Other than that I think the clans pretty much are clear.

When you enter into a city/nation and a member of a clan tells you to remove any article of clothing and offers an explanation why it’s usually a good thing to do so. For example of you walk into Amador wearing a cloak with a sunburst (I think that’s what they refer to the symbol as) on the your cloak, a CoL cloak, and a *oL tells you to remove it and you do not belong to the *oL clan. It might be best to remove the cloak and start explaining exactly why you were wearing a cloak that you should not have. Not only is it forbidden for an unclanned to wear clanned gear some nation ban the wearing of Seanchan gear also. Andor for example I know has a standing ban on all ‘insectoid helmets’. If you comply with them they will often offer a trade for a most acceptable helmet.

As a general rule, Chats, and OOC or out of character comments, Narrates are IC or In Character comments. While this is widely debated and abused warrants have been issued for comments made on chats. Like I said this is a general rule only, and is not written in stone.

Follow the house rules, if you play WoTMUD you are playing for free, at the expense of someone else. It takes money to host a mud, servers fees, and the time and dedications to the game itself to make sure that everything runs correctly. So please read the rules on the forums, follow house rules, and keep profanity off of globals, Chats and narrates.
I will leave you with one additional bit of advice, it’s plain, simple, and to the point.

HAVE FUN!!!!

Thanks Dare! That's some great advice. If you want to be featured (or want someone else to be featured!) next week, contact me via forum mail or by email at wotmudnewb@gmail.com.

Lifestyles of the Geared and Listed

Sorry for the late post today, guys. It was delayed a little bit because of the new patch, so I couldn't check the Lists.

There was a flurry of activity on the Sei'taer list this week! Kyra and Tuk moved up, while Ragan made a new appearance on the list, in sixth spot. The Ta'veren list also saw a little bit of activity, with Vaen moving up into third spot and knocking Ryalth down into fourth. The Reaver list, however, remained unchanged.

This weeks highlight doesn't involve anyone on the Lists, but is a great log of pking low, taking risks and than making silly mistakes that result in a funny death. All the makings of a great comedic tragedy! Posted by Matheus in the Ouch that really did HURT! thread:
